Mehkia Applewhite
Combo Guard
Scouting Report
Mehkia Applewhite is an excellent 2022 point guard that attends Cape Hnlopen High School in Lewes, Delaware. Great size at 5'9 / 165 lbs. Strong, athletic build, College ready body. Tremendous overall skill set. Great work ethic and highly competitive. First Team All League Performer, Top 15 Selection and 3rd Team All State as a Junior. Team captain and is on pace to be a 1000pt scorer during her senior season. Dual sport athlete who is also a very solid sprinter and thrower in track & field.
Mehkia has been a 3 year varsity starter for Cape Henlopen HS and has helped the team compile a 54-9 record over her first 3 seasons with deep playoff runs in all 3 years. She currently plays AAU basketball for the East Coast Thunder and last year she played for Team Durant.
Excellent ball handler, 3 level scorer, very craft. Consistent outside shot. Very high basketball IQ. Great foot speed and extremely athletic. 25" Vertical leap. EXCELLENT LOCK DOWN DEFENDER.
2020-21 Season Averages: 15.5 points, 3.5 assists, 6 rebounds and 2.5 steals per game. Shot 36% from behind the arc and had a 1.67 assist to turnover ratio. She has a complete game!
Mehkia showcases the ability to consistently put pressure on defenses with her penetration ability and finishes well in the lane. Very tough to guard. Knows how to get to her spots and has a solid floater, mid range and consistent outside shot. She likes to get her teammates involved, great passer, excellent court vision. Plays the game the right way. High character kid, extremely coachable. Excels in the open court.
Mehkia can effectively play both the point or shooting guard positions.
Defensively is where Mehkia separates herself from other solid guards. Night in and night out she is tasked with guarding the opposing teams best offensive player, a task that she not only accepts but she relishes in. Over the past 3 years she has guarded the areas best players in HS and on the AAU circuit many who in many cases have been D1 or D2 commits and she has given them all fits. She is aggressive, physical, has good lateral quickness and active hands which often puts her in position to create turnovers. Solid rebounder who doesn’t shy away from mixing it up in the lane. Her athleticism, strong build and long arms allow her to be physical on the perimeter making it difficult for offensive players to be comfortable, create space or get into the lanes.
She is certainly a great two way player and will do well at the collegiate level because of her commitment and competitiveness on the defensive end of the floor.
Academically Mehkia is an honor roll student and maintains a 3.2 GPA; she would be an asset for many high level college basketball programs.
Definitely an under the radar 2022 prospect that will make an immediate impact for the lucky college program that gets her services for the next 4-5 years. Certainly a kid to have on your radar if she isn't already!
